Biography
| |
 |
Darren Manning's affable personality and appreciation of a good joke belies his serious, no-nonsense approach to racing. He is all business in the cockpit.
Manning came from humble beginnings - his family sold their home to bankroll his career in its early stages.
"I lived on the sofas of friends and friends of the family, and then in a spare room on a little put-me-up for a couple of years. I was instructing at Silverstone for a 100 pounds a day and all that money went straight into racing," Manning said. "I've slept on floors and had no money for a long time so nothing can get me down, I've been everywhere. I've been down there."
Manning's career has been studded with international success such as winning the Macau F-3 Grand Prix, which garnered him offers from the Williams and BAR Honda F1 teams. For all his success, Manning was looking for a ride when he began his Indy car career in 2003.
He set a land speed record whilst driving backwards in a Caterham during the British TV show "Pulling Power."
