Biography
| |
 |
A.J. Foyt IV has always been on the fast track to racing success.
The grandson of four-time Indianapolis 500 champion A.J. Foyt began his driving career in junior dragsters at age 9, winning two titles, before moving to go-karts at age 11. Despite his famous name, Foyt earned his way up the racing ladder. His first job was working at the race shop as a parts washer and he served on the crew and changed right-front tire for A.J. Foyt Racing IndyCar Series driver Airton Daré during the 2002 season.
That same season, he won the inaugural Indy Pro Series title before stepping up to the IndyCar Series the following season as an 18-year-old. He finished 18th in the 87th Indianapolis 500 on his 19th birthday, becoming the youngest driver to start the race.
Foyt was born in Louisville, Ky., and his parents thought he would become a jockey because his father, Tony, trained thoroughbred horses. He physically outgrew that notion.
