HI9R Series
- Honda's engine for the 2009 IRL IndyCar® Series features a revised exhaust and silencer system designed for a more "fan friendly" sound; and continues the electronic "paddle-shift" transmission system introduced last season.
- The HI9R will continue to provide a long service life between rebuilds, up to 1,400 racing miles. The new engine continues to run on 100 percent fuel-grade ethanol, as used in IndyCar Series racing since 2007
- In 2006, after scoring back-to-back IRL Manufacturers' Championships, Honda became the single engine supplier to the IndyCar Series, and will continue in this role through 2010. A pool of more than 80 engines is prepared for the start of each season, then maintained by HPD and technical partner Ilmor Engineering. The HI9R will be used by all teams in the 2009 IRL IndyCar Series
- In 2008, a total of 39 drivers completed 242,667 racing miles over the course of the 18-race season without a single race-day failure. Honda also powered the entire 33-car Indianapolis 500 starting field, and for a record-extending third consecutive race, there were no engine-related retirements during the running of the Memorial Day classic
